All-New 2022 Subaru BRZ
Subaru might be best known for their capable and comfortable family SUVs, but the Japanese carmaker also has some much more exotic tricks up their sleeve. The all-new 2022 Subaru BRZ is a two-door coupe that combines blistering performance with high-end comfort to deliver an exhilarating drive that owes more to the track than the suburban driveway. The latest model is now available for test drive, and here are the key highlights you can expect.
New Sleek and Sporty Design
The all-new BRZ benefits from a major new redesign to the exterior, which takes the traditional profile of a 2+2 coupe and adds extra aerodynamic flourishes to bring it firmly up to date. The end result is a low-slung, aggressive outline with a low centre of gravity for pavement-hugging grip.
Powertrain and Performance
At the heart of the BRZ powertrain lies a capable 2.4L Boxer engine, making an imposing 228 horsepower and 184lb-ft of torque. As befits a car with race track roots, the BRZ is defiantly rear-wheel drive only, although there's a choice of transmissions available. A six-speed automatic design with paddle shifters delivers a smooth and comfortable drive, but for the real sports experience there's also a close-ratio six-speed manual option to deliver old-school thrills.
The rest of the BRZ engineering also puts an emphasis on race track performance rather than city street predictability. The front suspension is a MacPherson strut design that's tuned to accommodate the Subaru's low hood, while the rear boasts a multi-link format that balances on the line between aggressive handling and smooth comfort.
Power steering is featured as standard, although it's been adapted to provide road feedback to the driver rather than delivering effortless cornering. And the final touch to the impeccable handling is provided by the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system which offers five degrees of control over traction, including an 'off' setting for down-and-dirty driving with complete driver control.
Unlike some other performance cars which take a spartan approach to the interior, the BRZ offers a premium experience while still keeping a focus on the drive. Low-profile bucket seats combine with supportive padding to make g-force cornering easy, while the clever body design offers excellent all-round visibility.
Essential driving information is delivered by a 7" digital instrument cluster, which is fully configurable to show more esoteric data including track-mode instrumentation and g-force readings. Infotainment is handled by an all-new 8" touchscreen display, which responds to voice control as well as touch.
Advanced Safety Tech
And while the Subaru BRZ always keeps the driver in total control, extra safety is provided for with a generous suite of active systems. Highlights include automatic collision avoidance, lane departure and sway warnings, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control for carefree highway cruising.
