2020 Subaru Outback Expert Review: Features, Specs, & More

2020 Subaru Outback Expert Review: Features, Specs, & More

Crossover SUVs have gained in popularity over the past several years because they offer storage space, passenger space, agile handling, smooth rides, and towing capabilities. They seamlessly transition from quick zips around the city to long hauls on the highway. Almost all car manufacturers offer some sort of crossover SUV, and two of the most popular for 2020 are the Subaru Outback and the Toyota RAV4.

What's new with the 2020 Subaru Outback?

Subaru Outback 2020 Review by Wolfe Langley Subaru

Subaru has enjoyed a long, and well-deserved, reputation for safety and excellence. The 2020 Subaru Outback is no different. Named as an IIHS Top Safety Pick and named the Best Mid-Size Utility Vehicle in Canada for 2020, the Subaru Outback offers extreme capability for all on-road or off-road adventures.

The Subaru Outback was completely redesigned for 2020. Now built on the Subaru Global Platform, the 2020 model offers the choice of two all-new SUBARU BOXER engines--a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder that provides 182 hp, 176 lb-ft of torque, and 9.0/7.1 city/hwy fuel economy (L/100 km) and a 2.4-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder that provides 260 hp, 277 lb-ft of torque, and 10.1/7.9 city/hwy fuel economy (L/100 km).

Featuring standard AWD and next-generation safety technology, such as X-MODE, EyeSight, and rear/side vehicle detection system, the 2020 Subaru Outback starts at $30,695 for the lowest model. There are seven different models from which to choose: Convenience, Touring, Limited, Premier, Outdoor XT, Limited XT, and Premier XT.

What's new with the  2020 Toyota RAV4?

2020 Toyota RAV4 Review

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 offers more variety than the Subaru Outback in that it is available in both FWD and AWD versions and with a gas or hybrid engine. There are five models available with a gas engine: LE FWD, XLE FWD, LE AWD, XLE AWD, and Limited AWD. There are an additional four models available with a hybrid engine: Hybrid LE AWD, Hybrid XLE AWD, Hybrid XSE AWD, Hybrid Limited AWL.

Starting at $28,090 and offering 203 horsepower, the RAV4 is beautifully designed, comfortably equipped, and fuel-efficient with a rating of 8.8/6.8 L/100km city/highway for the FWD versions and 9.2/7.1 L/100km city/highway for the AWD versions. The hybrid gets 5.7/6.3 L/100km city/highway. All Toyota RAV4 models come equipped with the Star Safety System, which includes smart stop technology, vehicle stability control, anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist.

There are not a lot of differences between the 2020 Subaru Outback and 2020 Toyota RAV4. They offer a similar size, cargo capacity, and fuel economy. One of the main differences is that the Subaru comes standard with AWD, which puts it right in line with the price for the affordable model with AWD. Another main difference is that the Outback can tow a significantly larger amount than the RAV4 when loaded with heavy equipment. While both Outback and RAV4 are very similar crossovers, the Outback offers more standard features than the RAV4 and its highly lauded safety features protect everyone riding in the vehicle.
