2020 Subaru Ascent now available in Langley
There's no shortage of three-row crossover family SUVs available in Canada. However, in recent years the model has carved out its own niche thanks to its impressive combination of performance, interior comfort, and attractive affordability.
With the new 2020 version of the Ascent, does the range still deserve a place at the head of the family SUV pack? Read below to find out more.
A three-row SUV needs a lot of power under the hood, and the Ascent certainly doesn't disappoint in this area. Packing a 2.4L turbo engine producing 260 horsepower and 277lb-ft of torque, passed through a continuously variable transmission to all-wheel drive, the Ascent is a car that can handle everything you throw at it.
Performance is improved even further by the inclusion of Subaru's innovative X-Mode as standard across the range. This advanced system tweaks the power distribution to the four wheels individually, increasing traction and stabilizing handling across a wide range of difficult driving conditions.
Fuel economy is essential for any family SUV, and despite the Ascent's size, it performs at the leaner end of the scale. Figures of 11.2L / 100km in the city and 8.7L / 100km on the highway are highly respectable, making this a reliable SUV that can still run to a tight budget.
Interior Tech and Comfort
The Ascent's 6.5" touchscreen is a little on the small side for a car in this bracket, but the display is clear and bright and looks a little larger than it actually is. Making up for the slightly small size is the inclusion of dual LCD monitors in the front, along with a satellite-capable six-speaker audio system. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard for seamless device connectivity.
The interior is pleasantly comfortable with three-stage heating for the front seats, and plenty of space for up to eight total passengers throughout the rest of the cabin.
Subaru's Eyesight system is offered as standard on every Ascent, providing excellent safety features including collision detection and avoidance, lane-keeping assistance, and an alert that sounds if the vehicle is stationary in moving traffic.
One unusual feature which will interest families with young children is an automatic warning system that detects if the rear seats are in use as the car is locked, helping to avoid the occupants being left behind by rushed parents.
